Free Practice One was the weekend’s only opportunity to set practice laps before action got underway with Sprint Qualifying.
Lance tested all three tyre compounds across the hour-long session. He started out on the Hard tyres, switched to Softs after 35 minutes and then pitted to complete the final 10 minutes on Mediums.
Lance concluded the session with 26 laps collected.
Lance qualified P22 for the Sprint. He started from P21 after Alex Albon began from the pit lane.
On the Soft tyre, Lance gained a position on the opening lap, and then claimed another place on Lap 2.
The team were unable to get the setup right for the Sprint, meaning further progress was tricky, and ultimately Lance finished the 17-lap Sprint in P21.
The AMR26 setup felt better for Lance in Qualifying. He was happier with the car, but due to the poor performance of the AMR26, qualified P21, ahead of teammate Fernando Alonso.
Lance faced a 10-place grid penalty following a battery change which resulted in him lining up P22.
On the Medium tyre, Lance was up to P17 by the end of Lap 2, having gained five places.
At the end of Lap 18, Lance made his first pitstop, coming in for the Hard tyre. Unfortunately, he just missed out on a brief Virtual Safety Car a few laps later.
Lance recieved a five-second time penalty after exceeding track limits due to the AMR26's unpredictability.
A Safety Car was deployed on Lap 48 following a crash for Max Verstappen. Lance took advantage of the period and pitted for Softs, but ultimately the race ended under the Safety Car and Lance finished in P19.
Lance’s season will continue on 17-19 July with the Belgian Grand Prix.
Lance Stroll, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team, said:
"We have the information we need and understand where we need to improve, so these weekends are just a case of being patient and waiting for the upgrades to come.
"We had a lot of understeer during the race and a very unpredictable car, so it's hard with track limits. I'm always trying to give it everything I can, and hopefully things get better soon."
