Lance hails ‘great strategy’ for P8 finish in Monaco GP

Lance claimed P8 in Formula One’s Monaco Grand Prix as Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team took its first double-points finish of the 2021 season.

Lance claimed P8 in Formula One’s Monaco Grand Prix as Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team took its first double-points finish of the 2021 season.

Due to polesitter Charles Leclerc being unable to start the race, Lance was effectively promoted to P12 as the racing got underway.

He made a strong start to gain a place and almost moved past the Alpine of Esteban Ocon at the hairpin before settling into P11.

By lap 38 of 78, the Canadian driver had moved up into P8 on a set of Hard tyres, taking advantage of the first round of pitstops for the Soft-running Alfa Romeo of Antonio Giovinazzi and  Ocon..

Lance extended the gap between himself and Ocon before pitting on lap 58 for a new set of Soft compound tyres, re-emerging from the pitlane in P8.

Lance was able to take the chequered flag in P8 and collected four points at the historic Monte Carlo venue.

“Both cars scoring points in Monaco is a good day for the team. We executed a great strategy and picked up some deserved points for our hard work. It was not easy to race on the hard tyre in the first stint, especially at the start, but I was able to launch well off the line. That gave us a platform for the rest of the race, which came to life late in the stint as we pushed to make the overcut viable or be ready in case the Safety Car came out. We gained three places through the overcut in the end and had strong pace to the end, too. We are still learning every race and we can be proud of the job we did today. We will work hard to keep up this momentum in Baku.”

FP1 for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place on Friday June 4 from 9:30 AM BST.
