Due to the Sprint format, there was only one Free Practice session, meaning it was important to learn as much information about how the car reacted to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as possible.
Lance started out on the Hard tyre, but approximately ten minutes into the session, a Red Flag put a pause to running. The session resumed a few minutes later and Lance was back out on track.
20 minutes into FP1, Lance switched to the Soft compound. However, five minutes later, another Red Flag brought him back into the pits.
As a result of the long delays, the session was given a 15-minute extension to allow for additional data collection, leaving Lance with 35 minutes remaining once the session resumed.
With 10 minutes to go, he pitted for Mediums and began collecting data before a third Red Flag period began.
Overall, Lance collected 30 laps of information.
Lance got out onto the track to start SQ1 on Mediums. Another Red Flag paused the session, and after SQ1 got back underway, Lance was one of the only drivers to make it to the line.
However, the tyres were too cold due to sitting in the pit lane. Therefore, the time couldn’t be improved upon.
The team worked to successfully repair a suspension issue on Lance’s car ahead of the Sprint, resulting in him starting from the pit lane.
On the Soft tyre, Lance climbed positions throughout the Sprint and ultimately crossed the line P16.
The track temperature on Sunday was significantly lower than the previous days. Rain had also fallen on the track prior to the race, resulting in further low grip.
After changing the battery of his AMR26, Lance started from the pit lane. He initially opted for Intermediates, but after assessing track conditions across several formation laps, he switched to the Soft tyre to begin the race.
On Lap 16, Lance pitted for fresh Softs.
The race saw several incidents for other drivers due to the small margins for error and the challenge of poor grip. The AMR26 also struggled to get temperature into the tyres.
Lance’s final pitstop came on Lap 53, right as a Virtual Safety Car began, resulting in less time lost in the pit lane. Lance came back out on Mediums to conclude the race in P15.
Lance’s season will continue on 5-7 June for the Monaco Grand Prix.
Lance Stroll, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team, said:
"It's been a difficult weekend in Montréal. We couldn't get the temperatures we needed into the tyres and we were struggling for grip throughout the race. We didn't have the pace we needed on the straights either.
"The car performance isn't where we need it to be and there's still a lot of work to do to get us there."
