Lance ends Spanish GP just outside the points

Lance narrowly missed out on points after a near race-long battle for P10 in Formula One’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lance narrowly missed out on points after a near race-long battle for P10 in Formula One’s Spanish Grand Prix.

As the race got underway, Lance quickly began to battle Alpine’s Fernando Alonso for position and an early Safety Car on lap 8 of 66 offered him the chance to make progress.

Once the race resumed after two laps under the Safety Car, Lance was able to make his way in P10.

Whilst running in P10 on lap 22, Lance opted to pit for his first stop of the race, replacing his Soft Pirelli rubber with a set of new Mediums before re-joining the pack.

The Canadian driver was able to take advantage of the first set of pitstops to work his way back up the positions before his second stop on lap 39 for a set of used Soft tyres.

As the final laps began to tick down, Lance chased down Alonso for P10, making a move on the Spanish driver into Turn One before Alonso made contact with the AMR21, sending Lance wide and off track.

Due to his off-track excursion, Lance allowed Alonso back through into P10 and continued the battle for the final points-scoring position.

Once Alonso pitted with only five laps remaining, Lance and the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly were left to duel for P10. Unfortunately, Lance was unable to fend off the Frenchman and had to settle for P11.

“It is a bit frustrating not to get the point at the end. We fought hard with the AlphaTauri, but just did not have enough to get P10. We also raced hard against Fernando [Alonso] and the moment at Turn One was a racing incident: I braked deep into the corner and he was late on the brakes. We made some contact and he pushed me wide. This weekend has helped us continue to learn and improve the car. We will keep pushing to unlock some more speed before Monaco.”

F1 will be back for the Monaco Grand Prix on Thursday May 20 from 10:30 AM BST for FP1.
