Lance Stroll was cruelly denied the opportunity to score points for the Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix following a heavy crash.

Lance, who was running fourth and off-strategy at the time, crashed through no fault of his own and the team is investigating the cause.

Lance initially began the Grand Prix from 19th on the grid.Once the lights went out, the Canadian driver wasted no time in making headway up the pack, gaining four places by the end of the lap four of the 51-lap-long race.

Running a set of new Hard compound Pirelli tyres, Lance was able to benefit from a flurry of early pitstops from the rest of the pack and, by the end of lap 12, he was comfortably within the points in P5 without taking a pitstop.

Lance was able to gain another position into P4 but he crashed heavily into the barrier on the main straight on lap 29, bringing out a safety car and ending Lance’s race.

Lance had been set to make the overcut work, and his encouraging pace looked set to reward him with a top 10 finish and points.

Lance Stroll – Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team Driver

“I am frustrated not to finish the race, but I am OK. We were on course to score good points by running much longer before the pit stops and overcutting a lot of cars. That proved it was the right call to start on the hard tyres because we had good pace throughout the first stint and the race was coming to us. I am not sure what happened to cause me to spin on the straight because there was no sign of any issues, so we need to investigate. It has been a challenging weekend for me, but there are positives to take, especially our race pace, and, of course, the podium for Sebastian. Huge congratulations to the whole team.”

Lance will return to track for the French Grand Prix on Friday June 18 from 10:30am BST.
